Chapter 29: The Unseen Side of The Demon - June 19, 2000

The Vampiro and The Demon story continues. Finally a fitting horror story for The Demon and a good, movie-like storyline thanks I assume to the return of the writer Eric Bischoff.

As any good movie or story, in order to stand behind our protagonist we have to know more about him and get to know him as a human being. The previous writers completely had no clue how to write a story other than sweaty guys in speedos shouting at each other and to the audience. They didn't know what to do with The Demon beside mocking and ruining him. They gave him comedic skits and one dime a dozen wrestler after another to have a feud with, then pushed 'repeat'

This changed with his storyline with Vampiro. Anyway, so the good narrative makes sure the audience gets to know the protagonist, and also his human side which he doesn't normally show. And that's the great thing that's done in this episode.

All of a sudden, we get to see The Demon, but not The Demon we had seen before, but The Demon as a real person. His behind the scenes side. For the first time we get to see this Demon without the makeup and in his real identity, as Dale Torborg. Not only that, but we also get to see his human side, that he has a fiance (today his wife) which he loves and cares for, a female wrestler named Asya. A fact shown for the first time on Nitro episode (although she had been revealed as his fiance in the last entry on Thunder). Plus, we also get to see that he has an inner conflict with himself. From his conversation with Asya, we hear that he was absent from WCW for so long because he was attending therapy to get rid of his alter ego, The Demon. It seems that The Demon is his alter ego which takes him over, or rather, possesses him. Dale explains that he feels like he's coming back again, and that Asya is Vampiro's target because of him so he asks her to hide his Demon costume from him so he can't find it and it won't trigger his Demon persona. Dale's shown as a soft spoken, very nice and caring guy, and from all the interviews I've seen, he really is that nice guy

Dale Torborg: "I went away for 2 months for therapy, I thought he's gone, but he came back again. I don't know what I'm gonna do but until then we can't have a normal life together and you know I would do anything I can to make it normal for us and put him away for good"

Dale Torborg's name is officially revealed on Nitro (it has been previously on Thunder) and the commentators underline all the things we had just heard, like that Dale Torborg is The Demon, and that he has a personality disorder and tries not to turn into The Demon again

Tony Shiavone: "We saw Dale Torborg talking to his fiance Asya, and he was talking about 'him' and he shoved her the cape of The Demon. He wrestled as The Demon here in WCW, the Kiss Demon, and apparently he's blaming this on what looks to be his alter ego, more than just a character. A part of him is The Demon"

Scot Hudson: "Looks to me like Dale Torborg is a victim of split personality disorder, he's Dale Torborg one minute, The Demon next"

Vampiro is shown to be watching it all and not being too happy what he sees.

He comes to the stage and we get to see a beginning of his obsession with The Demon. He explains that he sees a lot of potential in him and a lot in common, but fears the persona might be going away, so he cooked up a plan. He calls out Dale And Asya and they both come out.

Vampiro: "Last week I came across somebody who I thought had a lot of potential, The Demon. I thought that this was somebody I can have something in common with. Rock'n'roll, makeup, FIRE. And of course, mayhem. But now I hear he's going away, so you know, we've got to do this right, let's have a little party"

Scott Hudson commented :"Seems like Vampiro has figured it out, Dale Torborg wants to dump The Demon, ditch that alter ego, get rid of the split personality thing"

After some rants from Vampiro, the lights go out and when they come back on, Asya is missing. The lights go out again and Vampiro is gone from the ring too.

Suddenly he appears on the monitor driving away in a hearse. Dale rushes outside and that's all we see in this episode

The inference here is that Vampiro kidnapped Asya of course. And this is just the beginning. Now, this storyline was so interesting for a change, to me at least, that even my friends got into it when I told them about it and started following it.
